Tongan Language Week 2025

Celebrate Tongan Language Week at Hunters Plaza!

Uike Kātoanga‘i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga

We’re proud to celebrate Tongan Language Week here at Hunters Plaza from 17 – 23 August 2025. This is a time to recognise and honour the beautiful Tongan language, rich culture, and the strong Tongan community that plays such an important role in our centre and surrounding area.

This special week is all about keeping Lea Faka-Tonga (the Tongan language) alive, passing it on to younger generations, and encouraging everyone to embrace and celebrate Tongan identity.

Try These Tongan Phrases!
Get involved by greeting our team or your fellow shoppers in Tongan:

Mālō e lelei – Hello

Fēfē hake? – How are you?

Mālō ‘aupito – Thank you

‘Ofa atu – With love

Even a small word can go a long way in making someone feel seen and valued.

Did You Know?
Tonga is the only Pacific nation never colonised.

The Tongan flag has remained unchanged since it was adopted in 1875!

Tongan culture celebrates fāmili (family), lotu (faith), and respect at its core.

🍬 Join in on the celebrations! 🍬

Don’t miss our DIY Candy Lei activity, where you can create your very own colourful candy necklace. It’s a hands-on activity perfect for kids to get creative and embrace a bit of Pacific flair.

Saturday 23rd August, 2025
Between 11am – 2pm (outside Kmart)

Whether you’re part of the Tongan community or just eager to learn something new, Tongan Language Week is a great opportunity to connect, appreciate, and celebrate.

Mālō ‘aupito – thank you for celebrating with us!
