Maori Language Week 2025

Celebrate Māori Language Week at Hunters Plaza!
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

We’re excited to celebrate Māori Language Week (Te Wiki o te Reo Māori) here at Hunters Plaza. It’s a time to honour te reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa, and to encourage everyone to give it a go! Whether you know a few phrases or none at all, this week is about learning, sharing, and embracing the beauty of te reo.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori runs from Monday 8th – Sunday 14th September 2025. It’s the perfect chance for us all to connect with our national language and celebrate its growing presence in everyday life—from greetings at work to the names of our streets and landmarks.

Easy Māori Phrases to Try

Why not learn a few simple greetings to use while shopping at Hunters Plaza?

  • Kia ora – Hello / Hi
  • Mōrena – Good morning
  • Kei te pēhea koe? – How are you?
  • Tēnā koe – Thank you (to one person)
  • Ka kite anō – See you later

Give them a go next time you visit! You might be surprised how many people reply with a smile and a cheerful kia ora back.

Why Māori Language Week Matters

Te reo Māori is a treasure (taonga) and an important part of our shared identity in Aotearoa. By learning even a few phrases, we help keep the language alive for future generations and show respect for the culture that shapes our country.

Haere mai!
We invite you to join us during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. Shop, learn, and celebrate with us!
