Breast Cancer Awareness Month – how can you get involved.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there are heaps of ways you can get involved. From walking to fundraising, going pink for a day to shopping (yes, shopping!) here are the ways you can help:

Get your walk on

Pink ribbon walks are all about joining together as a community – about celebrating survivors, remembering those that we have lost, raising awareness and much-needed funds. There are walks in both Auckland and Christchurch and you can choose whether to do a 5km or 10km walk.

Volunteer

The Pink Ribbon Street Appeal takes place on the 27th and 28th October, and they’re always looking for volunteers. You can sign up for a two-hour shift and help fund breast cancer education, research and patient support

Go pink for the day

Every day, nine women in NZ are diagnosed with breast cancer, so its likely that someone in your workplace will be diagnosed, has had breast cancer in the past, or is supporting someone with breast cancer. By taking part in Pink For a Day, you’ll be raising vital funds and making sure your team has access to important breast health information.

Shop for good

You can do good just by shopping! Generous companies have supported Breast Cancer Foundation by developing ‘pink products’ – their usual great-quality products, but with a pink twist. For every pink product you buy, a portion of the sales will go towards raising awareness, supporting NZers with breast cancer, and funding life-saving new research.

Get a mammogram

Women have a 95% change of surviving breast cancer five years or longer if the cancer is detected by a mammogram. Because the risk of breast cancer increases as you get older, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ recommends women consider having regular screening from th age of 40.

Make a donation

The easiest option is to donate! Your donation helps fund breast health and early detection programs; help our hospitals get access to the latest technologies and equipment and train our doctors and nurses to use them; fund ongoing research and fellowships and support breast cancer patients and their families.
